I added an accessibility mode for people with additional needs, who may be unable to complete Strava activities or only do short distances. There is an option in the settings to toggle the mode on and off, and a description of what it does so it is clear to the player.
When the mode is on, there is an extra icon on the home page. This button opens the accessibility panel where the player can type in the amount of time they have done exercise outside of Strava, for example time spent on physiotherapy exercises. Once the time has been entered, the player is given 1.5 points per minute, which equates to approximately 50 points per 34 minutes. This is the average time to run 5km (Runbundle, n.d.). Tracking a 5km run with Strava awards 50 points, so the accessibility mode gives points at a similar rate.
As players may be able to use Strava but for shorter distances, I added a 2x multiplier to the points earned from completing Strava activities, so a player using the accessibility mode will gain the same amount of points with half the distance of someone not using it.
A large proportion of XP players earn is from completing quests with their Strava activities. To accommodate the accessibility mode, I thought about changing the quests. Due to how the manual activity entry works, there would be very little variety in quests as they could only be the number of activities or activity time. I decided to give XP for every manual activity instead. The XP given for every 30 minutes of activity is equal to the XP for completing one quest, and scales with the player’s level at the same rate as the quest XP.
